Go Local in 2013 with StoneHouse Wood Fire Grill.
The food trailers are popping up everywhere. This new food trailer is off of 620. This place has burgers, lamb kabobs, sandwiches, cilantro rice. Yum! Its all good.
My fav so far is the ATX Burger. I had the Zucci Burger this last weekend and I was less impressed.
If the weather is nice you can sit outside at the picnic tables. It’s a nice little area with a few games while you wait. Giant jenga anyone?
There is only one BBQ trailer in this area. Hopefully they put something else in soon. A dessert trailer maybe?

Cow Tipping Creamery-– A new twist on soft serve! This ice cream place was north off of 620 but recently relocated to UT”s West Campus food trailer area. (2512 Rio Grande) Don’t pay attention to some the yelp reviews, no doubt written by college kids.
This place is unique and you do get a lot for your money. It’s family run and the couple behind the counter are very nice.
I had the Salty Sweet Cone, messy but delicious. I have a serious sweet tooth but it was satisfied after this sweet cone.
Here is their menu, so many options!
The Guinness shake was also well liked. The only other placeI know you can get one is the Alamo Drafthouse.

Go Local in 2013 with:
A very tasty BBQ Trailer that is in the South Austin Trailer Park located on IH 35 South just before Riverside. It’s right next to the Holiday Inn in a small new trailer food area just off the highway.
Its easy to miss, but not east to forget. I had the chopped brisket sandwich with onions, pickles and Cj’s own BBQ sauce. Yum! Its fairly priced, I even took extra home for dinner on my last visit!
They have weird hours so you should call before you head over if your not in the area. But its worth the trip.
More info on Facebook or on Yelp.

Gelato vs. Ice Cream

Have a sweet tooth? Have you tried gelato?
It’s similar to ice cream. Just made in smaller batches and using fresh ingredients, and tastes creamier. It’s said to be healthier than ice cream– 4 reasons Gelato is healthier.
Healthy dessert? Yes please.
This is one of our first posts on Locally owned for 2013! If you are in Austin, TX you should check out M Bella Gelato . They offer great & unique flavors including Grandma’s Apple Pie, Basil Lime, Jalapeno Watermelon, Peppered Chocolate. Just to name a few. I had their holiday special– peppermint mocha– over the holidays. OMG! It tastes like Starbucks Mocha- Peppermint frap, but in ice cream form. Deliziosissima!
So besides custom and unique flavors they have organic gelato and they do catering for parties, events, etc.
My only negative is that they need a trailer already! Check them out you won’t be disappointed.

Looking for a yummy uber healthy smoothie?
Try a veggie one! Great first thing in the morning. I start my day with one now. I don’t know how I’ll go back.
I had a great health smoothie in Costa Rica that I’ve been trying to re-create here. Don’t be fooled by its green color. It’s loaded with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Glutathione, Manganese, Fiber, Copper, Natural anti-inflammatory among other benefits.
What you’ll need:
Baby Spinach- fresh
Cucumber- fresh
Celery- fresh
Avocado- fresh
Pineapple- frozen. Plus gives it a sweet factor. w/o sugar
Apple- fresh
Squeeze of lemon & lime. Fresh
You can sub whatever you have in your fridge. I like adding the frozen pineapple because it gives it a nice consistency and a sweetness.
Depending on how much you’re making this for. I just make about 8oz serving at a time to drink every morning for breakfast.
Just a few slices goes a long way. A piece of each fruit/ veggie above will give you smoothies all week.
Directions:
-roughly 5 Baby Spinach leaves
– 2 slices Cucumber
– 1/3 of a celery stalk
-1 chuck of Avocado
– 2 slices of Apple
-4 or 5 small chunks of frozen pineapple
– a squeeze of lemon
– a squeeze of lime
– 6oz of cold filtered water
(or Coconut water, or cold white tea if you need a caffeine kick)
Combine and blend in a high capability blender. (I have a very handy magic bullet.) Puree for a few minutes until smooth.
Pour into your favorite glass.

We are going to do a whole series on local places. We are mostly going to focus on the lovely Austin, TX.
But will highlight businesses all over. Looking for something fun to do? New great place to eat? Have you been wondering about that hole- in the wall? Are you a super hipster looking for the unknown?
This is the place to be. Check back in with us for our updates. Do you have a great place? Tell me about it and send a few pics.
After all what’s better than supporting local businesses?!
So I’ve read a couple reports (Medscape (login required, so I quoted below) and more resources here) recently that state women over 25 should get a Pap test every three years, not annually with theor OB/GYN. Additionally Medscape states that women that have had hysterectomies are getting Pap tests unnecessarily:
“In their report on cervical cancer screening released yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) startlingly estimated that 22 million women in the United States may have undergone such screening unnecessarily, because they had already had hysterectomies… and with the guidelines changed for women 18-69″
This is news to me with many doctors and insurance companies pushing annually for everyone.
Why Annually?
Annually for people who are high risk (who have/carry HPV) and who have a high risk of cervical cancer.
Every 3 Years
For the rest of the population 25 to 69, require routine screening every three years, especially those over 30. With women under 25 not needing a reguar screeening.
There should still be regular testing for STD’s. But this can be done with or without getting a Pap test.
From Medscape:
“..Although there had been some variation in recommendations made by different organizations in the past, updated guidelines released last year saw a convergence of opinions and very similar recommendations issued by the American Cancer Society, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the US Preventive Services Task Force…
“….Another finding from the CDC survey was data suggesting that women in the 22- to 30-year-old age group were undergoing Pap tests annually instead of every 3 years, as per the new, updated guidelines.
This as well as some of the other findings suggest that it is taking some time for recommendations in the guidelines to filter through to clinical practice. Dr. Harper offers a few suggestions as to why this is the case: physicians may not be understanding the evidence for the change in the screening recommendations; reimbursement for the test still occurs; the patient feels at risk and requests frequent testing (“or the same testing as my sisters had…”); and nursing staff may set up the clinic rooms not understanding or accepting the change in guidelines.”
How does birth control fit in if I’m on the Pill?
If you are on birth control, such as the Pill. You would still need to see your doctor every year for your prescription refilled, at least in the US and Canada.
However worldwide doctors and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists are pushing to dispense birth control pills over the counter. This is due to health care costs and insurance.
But what if I’m on the Pill and have to get my yearly exam with my Pill prescription refill? What then? What if birth control pills were sold over the counter? There would be no need to see your doctor every year. Sure, there is risk associated with any drugs. But the rate of unplanned pregnancies, abortions would surely go down with wider access to more widespread and affordable access to the Pill. Not to mention less visits to the doctor. Why is there such a large gap between condoms /other contraceptives and then abortion?
The Morning After Pill is dispensed without a prescription, so why not the pill?
Will this change how often you go to the doctor?

Happy New Year Everyone!
A product that I love and take every day is Enzacta’s Alpha Energy. This could seriously replace my coffee.
Dr Jack Tips first recommended it and it really is a great product. From the Enzacta website when added to drinking water it acts like a catalyst to hydrate you on a cellular level. It does this by turning water into a PH corrected alkalized water to help hydrate while eliminating toxins and promoting increased energy.
All I know is that I put a few drops in my water every morning and it helps me wake up and helps my energy level. Not even just for a few hours but for the whole day and I am ready to go. 7am meeting? No problem! No wonder my co-workers look at me in disgust, how is she always so peppy? Now you know my secret. Days with low energy or bad allergy days (thanks Austin) I might put a few extra drops in.

White tea a food poisoning cure

I love tea but about a year ago I found out about white tea and its health benefits including natural antibacterial and antiviral benefits- as well as an already known antioxidant boost. Since, I’ve seen it popping up in all sorts of products. One of my favorites the Korres white tea face wash. I’ve seen it in everything else from hand soap, shampoos and conditioners, cleaning products, antiperspirant & deodorant, list goes on and on. Since then I’ve been trying to drink it as much as possible. Especially if I feel a little cold creeping up. Or if I have a day of bad allergies. I think the recommended dose it about 3 cups if white tea and that should knock anything out of your system.
I recently found a new use for white tea: food poisoning cure
I had food poisoning about two weeks ago, mind you I don’t get sick often, but this took me down. It was terrible. I was sicker than I’ve been in a long time, fever, chills, nausea the whole deal.. just horrible.. I was not able to eat or drink much but I started switching out some of the water with hot white tea. Unlike other teas it has a lighter flavor so it was palatable, didn’t upset my stomach. I have to say the white tea helped me more than anything else– totally flushed my system. In about a day I was functional again and feeling great.
So further proof to me that the antibacterial and antiviral properties of the white tea really work!
White tea has a real light taste, all most grassy. However you can find all different kinds of flavored white tea now. I’ve been drinking Tazo’s Vanilla Apricot White, very tasty.
Enjoy- To your health!
